UK to Estonia

Removals to Estonia

A long road run through Germany, Poland and the Baltic states, and one of the clearest cases in Europe for deciding the handling count before anything else. Groupage traffic to Tallinn is plentiful and cheap; a dedicated vehicle is neither, and it is handled a third as often.

On this corridor the cheapest option and the best-protected option are different services, not different prices for the same one.

Who moves this way

  • People relocating for work to Tallinn, where the technology sector draws a steady flow from the UK.
  • Academics and students moving to Tartu, usually with a flat's worth rather than a house's.
  • Returning Estonian households bringing a UK home back, frequently with a long gap between the two dates.

How the goods travel

A short crossing to the near continent, then the whole of the run is on land. There is no sea leg beyond the first hour, which is what makes a dedicated vehicle possible on this route at all — the goods never leave the trailer.

Through Belgium and the Netherlands onto the German autobahn network, across Poland on the A2 and the S8, then north through Lithuania and Latvia on the Via Baltica. The surfaces are good throughout and the driving is long rather than difficult.

Where we deliver

Tallinn and Harju county Apartment blocks with lifts fitted after the fact, and a protected old town closed to larger vehicles.
Tartu University city. Smaller consignments are the norm and groupage suits most of them.
Pärnu and the west coast Summer-house country. Good approach roads, and seasonal traffic in high summer.
Narva and the east Long distances from Tallinn and a border region, so timing matters more than usual.
Saaremaa and Hiiumaa Island destinations reached by ferry — worth establishing the count before booking.

Customs, and who obtains what

Estonia applies the standard transfer-of-residence relief on used household effects, claimed against a described inventory with evidence of both the departure and the arrival. The file itself is routine. What is not routine is deciding which service your goods travel on, because that decision has to be made before the packing specification is set.

The file, split in two

DocumentObtained byWhat it is
Valued inventory Us Written at your door as the vehicle loads, and translated where the receiving office requires it.
Estonian personal identification code You Issued on registration. A great deal else depends on it, so begin early.
Proof of the Estonian address You Lease or purchase contract, plus the registration of residence at the local authority.
Proof of leaving the UK address You Closing council tax, a tenancy end or the completion statement on the sale.
Passport and residence route You Whichever route applies to you. Immigration advice is not something we give.
Export and import entries Us Lodged against the inventory before the vehicle reaches the terminal.

Rows marked You are attached to you as a person and take real time to obtain, so start them before you have a moving date. Rows marked Us are built here from the inventory written at your door.

Why the count decides this route

Baltic groupage is a genuinely good market. Trailers run the corridor constantly, they fill quickly, and a part-load to Tallinn costs a fraction of a dedicated vehicle. For a single person's flat that is plainly the right answer and we will recommend it.

What it is not is the same service at a lower price. Your goods are loaded at your house, unloaded at a UK depot, loaded into a trailer with other consignments, moved across, unloaded at a receiving depot near Tallinn, and delivered. Six handlings, several of them by people who have never seen your house.

A dedicated vehicle on the same route is two. Nothing is set down between your old front door and your new one, and the crew who wrapped an item are the crew who set it down. It costs considerably more and for a full household it is frequently worth it.

So on this route we quote both, write the count on both, and specify the packing against whichever you choose. That is the entire difference between the two quotations and it is the thing worth understanding before you compare figures with anybody else.

Questions on this route

  1. 01

Which option do most people take?

Groupage, and for a flat's worth it is usually right. For a full household with furniture worth protecting, a dedicated load at two handlings is worth the difference and we will say so.

  2. 02

    Is there a sea leg?

Only the first crossing to the near continent, with the vehicle. The rest is road all the way, which is what makes a dedicated load possible on this route.

  3. 03

Can you reach the Tallinn old town?

A smaller vehicle can; a full-size one generally cannot. The protected core restricts vehicle access, so the plan is a legal standing point at the edge and a shuttle in.

  4. 04

    What about the islands?

Saaremaa and Hiiumaa add a ferry. Establish before booking whether the vehicle travels with the goods, because that is what decides whether the count rises.

  5. 05

    Will our appliances work?

Estonia runs the continental plug and voltage standard, so small items work with adaptors. Whether large white goods repay the space is a judgement we will give you honestly.

  6. 06

Can goods be held at this end first?

Yes, and on a relocation with an uncertain start date it is common. It adds two handlings, which we will count openly rather than quietly.

Moving to Estonia?

Both addresses, roughly what is going, and how firm the dates are. We will send both options with the counts on them and say which we would choose.
